The development of shopping malls as community centers: the experience of Arricano

The Arricano group of companies in Ukraine, which manages Prospekt shopping mall and RayON shopping mall in Kyiv, Sun Gallery shopping mall in Kryvyi Rih and CITY MALL shopping mall in front-line Zaporizhzhia, today performs a much broader function than simply servicing shopping and leisure areas. In the context of the war, shopping malls have become important areas of social support, stability and development of communities.

Arricano's strategy is aimed at developing shopping malls as community centers — places that combine business, social responsibility, partnership and public life. Charitable initiatives, CSR projects, regular family, educational, creative events and cultural events form an environment where visitors can join events, participate in the implementation of important projects, receive assistance, develop and interact with each other.

Multi-vector CSR: from Assistance to the Defense Forces to Support for Vulnerable Groups

Arricano's CSR strategy is built as a multi-vector system of assistance to various target groups — from the Defense Forces of Ukraine to children growing up without parents, large families, talented young people, the elderly and internally displaced persons.
During 2025, the Arricano Group of Companies in Ukraine allocated more than UAH 4.4 million for charitable projects and social initiatives.

  •     Support for the Defence Forces of Ukraine

In 2025, the Group's companies transferred DJI Mavic 3 drones, 4-channel electronic warfare systems, batteries for FPV drones, Bandera Power 430 S and EcoFlow DELTA 2 MAX charging stations, tactical medicine, medicines for the rehabilitation of seriously wounded military personnel, etc. to the needs of the Defense Forces. The partners of these initiatives were the NGO "Zgraya UA", the CF "Pokolinnia Maibutnoho", the CF "Omega-Dim", the CF "We Give Hope Together", the Union of Wounded Soldiers of Ukraine "Strong 300" and other organizations. Arricano also provided targeted assistance to the units where the company's employees serve, in particular, it transferred thermal imagers, Starlink, office equipment and other equipment.

  •     Support for children, large families and IDPs

It is important for Arricano to create opportunities for children growing up in war conditions. As part of the charity event "Prepare your child for the school", the company provided targeted assistance to the children of internally displaced persons, as well as supported the Educational Hub for teachers displaced from the temporarily occupied territories of the Zaporizhzhia region, providing it with the necessary materials.
RayON shopping mall transferred UAH 100,000 to the Center for Social and Psychological Rehabilitation of Children No.1 in Kyiv, where orphans, children deprived of parental care and those who find themselves in difficult life circumstances are located, for internal repair work of the building of the institution. The project "Give a Happy Moment", implemented by the team of Prospekt shopping mall together with the Dobriak Foundation and partners, as well as the presentation of New Year's gifts to children from large families of the NGO "SHCHASLYVA" are examples of a systematic approach to working with families in need of additional support. We are already preparing pleasant gifts for our little friends for the upcoming winter holidays.

  •     Focus on the elderly

A separate vector of the company's CSR strategy is initiatives for the International Day of Older Persons and projects aimed at socializing and supporting the older generation. For them, Arricano shopping malls are a safe, comfortable and affordable space where you can not only make purchases, but also join events, communicate and spend time with your family. This year, Prospekt and RayON shopping malls have once again implemented a charitable initiative to draw attention to the importance of communication and support for older people. Together with partners, we invited Kyiv residents to spend the weekend with elderly people: parents, grandparents, neighbor or colleagues who need our attention so much, and gave tickets to the cinema.

  •     Opportunities for talented young people

Arricano systematically works with talented youth, involving students of leading universities — Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Mariupol State University, National University "Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic", National University of Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine and Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University — in joint educational, sports and cultural projects.

Students and teachers of leading universities of Ukraine visited the opening of the interactive exhibition "Women's senses in the work of Taras Shevchenko" in Prospekt shopping mall: Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Mariupol State University, National University of Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine. Participants joined the traditional flashmob "Shevchenko Spring". Everyone read Kobzar's favorite work or his excerpt: the reciters covered both Shevchenko's poetry and deep meanings in prose, and even the work "Dumy moi, dumy moi" was aptly performed.
In addition, Arricano annually attracts talented young people to projects within the framework of Earth Day eco-initiatives in Kyiv shopping malls. Representatives of the Faculty of Geography of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv prepare special ecoquests, conduct master classes on terrain orientation and help with the selection of plants for planting in the DShK park. Students of the National University of Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine this year showed their creative and organizational abilities: they held family relays, master classes in various sports and performed a flash mob "Rhythm of the Heart". In addition, all guests took an active part in the plogging relay: in just a few hours, they managed to collect more than 140 kg of garbage in the park and make an important contribution to the improvement of their hometown.
Such activations create real opportunities for students to practice in marketing, management, communications, event organization, as well as to present their initiatives in the shopping mall. Arricano shopping malls also cooperate on an ongoing basis with children's and youth creative studios, dance centers, sports schools, organizing concerts, performances, competitions and festivals and large-scale family events.
CITY MALL also joined the elimination of the consequences of the drone attack on the Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University, financing the restoration of equipment, furniture and the purchase of building materials. 

The Shopping Mall as a Platform for Caring, Uniting and Meeting the Community

All Arricano shopping malls have long been meeting places for friends, family outings and integration events for different communities. The implementation of Arricano's marketing strategy is based on a calendar of regular activities that take place every month in four facilities and turn them into real community centers.

  •     Social and Inclusive Projects

In October Prospekt shopping mall launched a social project "Light Among Us: Restoration. Integration. Life", aimed at supporting the military and civilians affected by the war. The central event was the photo exhibition "Superhumans. Light Among Us", created jointly with Superhumans Center and photographer Yuliia Braverman. As part of the project, the shopping mall team spoke about barrier-freeness, a culture of communication and respect for people with disabilities, and also presented a manual "Let's be open" — a practical guide to correct communication.
These initiatives have not only a humanistic, but also an educational dimension, because they form a new culture of interaction in society. In addition, Prospekt shopping mall transferred UAH 100,000 to Superhumans Center for the rehabilitation of the military.

  •     Care for heAlth and Well-being

The long-term Arricano project — a cycle of social events "Caring Saturdays", this year took place in four shopping malls and invited visitors to receive free medical consultations, undergo primary examinations, join art therapy, listen to lectures on mental and physical health. In different months, nutritionists, psychotherapists, rehabilitologists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, dermatologists, trichologists, etc., as well as medical partners, joined the initiative. For example, the Sun Gallery shopping mall in Kryvyi Rih, together with CO "100 PERCENT LIFE", additionally organized free testing for HIV, hepatitis B and C.

  •     Urban Landscaping and Environmental Initiatives

One of the key areas of Arricano's social projects is the development of the urban environment. In April, the company traditionally holds GREEN MONTH — a month of green initiatives. In 2025, together with visitors and partners, the Prospekt shopping mall team planted trees and bushes in the DShK park in Kyiv (10 large maple plane trees and 65 lilac bushes), organized plogging, sports activities, workshops and children's interactive activities.

  •     Cultural and Educational Initiatives

In 2025, Arricano is implementing a long-term campaign of thematic events in order to preserve and promote cultural heritage as the basis of the national culture of the Ukrainian people and unite the shopping mall brand community around a common spiritual heritage. Every year at authentic events, our shopping malls turn into real centers of Ukrainian culture: with observance of folk customs and rituals, we met Kolodii and Sontsekres in all shopping malls in order to attract visitors to respect ancient Ukrainian traditions and their dissemination in modern times.
"Prospekt" shopping mall in partnership with the Taras Shevchenko National Museum presented a special project "Women's senses in the work of Taras Shevchenko". This is an interactive exhibition for the birthday of Kobzar, with which we not only honored the memory of the poet, but also created a space for visitors to inspire, reflect and dialogue with art.
On the occasion of the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language within the framework of the Cultural Microphone project, visitors to Prospekt shopping mall and RayON shopping mall sincerely declared their love and expressed respect for the Ukrainian language and recited poems by their favorite Ukrainian authors.
Sun Gallery shopping mall and CITY MALL shopping mall united visitors, partners, the shopping mall team, as well as students and university teachers in love with their native words, and traditionally became the city platform for writing the National Unity Radio Dictation.

  •     Holiday and Community Projects

· Rubik's DAY in RayON shopping mall and Prospekt shopping mall with record installations of Rubik's cubes, the participation of hundreds of children and adults and the fixation of a record of Ukraine;

· Festive formats for Independence Day, New Year's holidays, children's festivals, PRE-SCHOOL PARTY before the beginning of the school year, Sports Days and quest programs;

· Thematic events such as FANDOM COSPLAY FEST, Vision Board Day, Days of Cinema, Jazz, Fashion and Family Activities.

Events in Arricano shopping mall cover all age groups:

Solemn events, including the 17th anniversary of the Sun Gallery shopping mall and the 11th anniversary of the Prospekt shopping mall, combine concerts, creative performances, children's workshops, gift draws and partner activations. This not only strengthens the emotional connection between the shopping mall brand and its visitors, but also creates a sense of community.
In May, the Sun Gallery shopping mall became the main platform for celebrating the 250th anniversary of Kryvyi Rih and united the citizens at a special event filled with emotions, warmth and inspiration. The real emotional center of the event was the author's photo exhibition "The Face of the City: the Stories of Real Kryvyi Rih Residents" from the photographer and volunteer Yuliia Braverman. Through the lens, she showed those who hold the rear every day and create the history of Kryvyi Rih: doctors, military, rescuers, volunteers, and teachers. Sincere and deep photos impressed visitors and became the main point of inspiration.
On the occasion of the City Day and the 255th anniversary of Zaporizhzhia, an exhibition "Zaporizhzhia: People Creating Time" was organized in the CITY MALL, dedicated to Zaporizhzhia residents, who leave a mark in the memory of generations and create the present near us. The exhibition, which brought to life the stories of those whose names are closely related to Zaporizhzhia, was created in partnership with Zaporizhzhia Gymnasium No. 89. The exhibition has become a symbol of common memory and inspiration for new generations of cossacks.
Such events are always important and inspiring for local communities: they unite citizens around the shopping mall and increase brand loyalty.

Shopping Malls as Reference Points for Communities

The development of shopping malls as community centers is a conscious strategy of Arricano, combining marketing, CSR and social systems of cities. Assistance to the Defense Forces, support for orphanages, large families, IDPs, the elderly, creating opportunities for talented young people, environmental projects and urban improvement, regular educational and family events in four shopping malls — all this works as a single system.

As a result, shopping malls become more than a place of shopping: they turn into a space of trust, interaction and development, where every visitor feels an important part of the community.
